Mentoring 101 is a 90 minute, fast-paced and interactive event for new and experienced mentors. It walks through each of the mentoring principles and skills.
Key Messages:
- Mentoring and coaching are related terms and roles. You probably do both, almost inter-changeably. Coaching is more push-based and seeks to provide another person (your mentee) with advice and skills. Mentoring is pull-based; it is driven by the mentee. If you monitor the amount of time you talk vs. ask questions, you will start to feel the difference.
- Mentor skills can be assessed through self-assessment or through feedback from the mentee. See the image below.
The file below shows the full list of mentoring principles and skills. It outlines the skills needed for mentors to excel in their roles. It is intended as a tool to be used by the staff of organizations that have mentoring program with the volunteer mentors. The skills match the Life Solutions Network Mentoring 101 training.
Use this tool formally or informally. Formally, a supervisor of the mentor program may give structured feedback once or twice per year. Informally, mentors use it as a review before a mentoring session or to self-assess after a session. All learning can be pursued independently by clicking the image below.
